Developing Economies See Gasoline Consumption Soar, Leading Hydrocarbon
Components to Recover.
Developing economies such as China, India and Brazil are due to demand more and more Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), as increasing development and improving standards of living drive up gasoline consumption, says a new report by GBI Research.
The new report* states that a shift is predicted in upcoming installed capacity, from the developed economies of North America and Europe to the Middle Eastern and Asia-Pacific regions.
MTBE is a hydrocarbon produced from fossil fuels through certain cracking processes, and is used within gasoline blending as a fuel component, and also as a solvent.

The global demand for MTBE has declined over the last decade in large developed markets such as the US and Canada, following its classification as a pollutant and the consequent ban of its use in gasoline blending. These countries now use Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (ETBE) and ethanol as replacements, and as a result, global demand of MTBE dropped from 19,320,447 tons in 2000 to 12,103,666 in 2011.
However, developing economies in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific are set to expand their domestic use of MTBE exponentially. Increasing levels of global awareness and environmental protection have promoted the use of MTBE over recent years to phase out toxic substances such as lead, sulfur and benzene. In addition to this, rising standards of living are now boosting gasoline consumption levels. This is beginning to compensate for the demand decline in developed nations, and MTBE demand is expected to increase in developing countries so much so that global MTBE demand will reach 20,253,468 tons in 2020.
The availability of cheap feedstock in the Middle East has heralded a new era of industrialization in that part of the world, fueling the production of MTBE in Middle Eastern countries. However, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for a majority 67.8% share of the global market, as China sees increasing development which has drastically increased gasoline consumption throughout the past decade. Increasing environmental concerns in China have also catalyzed the growing MTBE demand, as the hydrocarbon can be used as a replacement for other additives in gasoline which have higher levels of sulfur. By 2020, China is expected to be the largest MTBE consuming market, covering over 50% of global demand.
