Tissue and hygiene experiences marginal growth in 2011

As Australia’s economy enters its fourth year of slow growth consumers are increasingly cutting back on spending, triggering perhaps the most influential event in the Australian tissue and hygiene market in 2011: a price war between the two major retailers, supermarkets Coles and Woolworths. Although this led to significant unit price drops across a range of products, toilet paper was the primary battleground. This led not only to plummeting unit prices, but also to a change in the long established hierarchy of toilet paper brands, as Quilton overtook Kleenex.

Ageing population boosts demand for incontinence products

Similar to many developed markets, Australia is experiencing an ageing of its population as the baby boomer generation reaches old age. This is having a significant impact on a wide variety of products. It is putting downwards pressure on sanitary protection, for example, as female members of the baby boomer generation reach menopause. However, the greatest impact is on incontinence products, which experienced double-digit growth. This performance was further stimulated in 2011 by a change in government programmes, which have driven an increasing number of incontinence sufferers to make purchases in the retail channel.

As easy as ABC

With the exception of private label products, the fastest growing company in tissue and hygiene in Australia is ABC Tissue, particularly its Quilton brand. While the two major players – Kimberly-Clark and SCA Hygiene – source and manufacture most of their products within Australia, ABC Tissue imports tissues in bulk parent rolls and simply converts the products in Australia. This allows it to undercut the other two major manufacturers in terms of price while not sacrificing quality – a business model that has helped the company make significant gains in 2011.

Supermarkets the channel of choice

Supermarkets represent the dominant channel for tissue and hygiene products in Australia, but despite price wars between Coles and Woolworths, this dominance weakened in 2011. The primary reason for this is the growing popularity of discounter Aldi. This player has gained a loyal following across a variety of categories, with its nappies/diapers/pants brand Mamia proving particularly popular.

Siding to 2016

This study analyzes the US siding industry. It presents data by siding material (e.g., vinyl, wood, fiber cement, stucco, metal panels, brick, EIFS, concrete and stone), market (residential, nonresidential) and US region including historical demand data for the years 2001, 2006 and 2011, and forecasts for 2016 and 2021 . The study also considers market environment factors, details industry structure, evaluates company market share and profiles industry players.
Demand to approach 100 million squares in 2016

US demand for siding is forecast to grow 8.4 percent per year through 2016 to 96.5 million squares, valued at $10.2 billion. Growth will be spurred by an increase in housing completions from their depressed 2011 base. Although housing completions will remain below the levels reached at their cyclical peak in 2006, the recovery will spark above-average gains in the residential siding market through 2016.

Residential market to post strong rebound

The forecast rebound in housing completions through 2016 will re-establish the new housing market as the largest end use for siding. Demand for siding in residential improvement and repair applications will rise at a moderate pace through 2016. Those homeowners that put off improvement projects -- such as the replacement of worn out or out-offashion siding -- will undertake them in the future, boosting demand.

Stucco, brick, fiber cement fastest growing materials

Among material types, stucco, brick, and fiber cement siding are forecast to see the most rapid demand gains through 2016, increasing at double-digit paces. The rebounding residential markets in the South and West regions of the US -- where these materials are most often installed -- are projected to experience the strongest growth in population and housing activity through 2016. Brick and fiber cement see wide use in the South, while stucco is most commonly used in the West region. Thus, as more homes are built and remodeled to meet the needs of the regions’ increasing population, demand for those siding materials will also advance.

Fiber cement siding will continue to take market share from other materials, such as vinyl and wood. Demand for fiber cement siding will be spurred by its ability to be produced into siding that resembles more costly materials, such as brick or stone. Fiber cement siding demand will also be supported by continuing consumer acceptance of the material because of its performance properties, such as resistance to degradation caused by insect attack and moisture.

Vinyl siding accounted for the largest share of siding demand in 2011. Vinyl siding will continue to lead the market in 2016, as such innovations as insulated vinyl siding and products that better resemble natural materials -- such as wood and stone -- will promote demand. However, competition from fiber cement and stucco siding will check growth. Fiber cement and stucco siding offer end users better long-term durability and require less maintenance.

Consumer Appliances in Hungary

Hungary’s consumer appliances market recorded volume and current value sales declines for the fourth consecutive year in 2011. This negative trend was a direct consequence of the global economic crisis, which caused prices and demand in the local property market to fall sharply and reduced the purchasing power of Hungarian consumers. The impact that these developments had on demand for consumer appliances was worsened by the fact that many Hungarians had mortgages and other loans denominated in Swiss francs and euros. When the economic crisis significantly weakened the value of the Hungarian forint against both currencies, these consumers saw their debts increase substantially. Political instability further undermined consumer confidence during the middle years of the review period. Nonetheless, thanks to a slightly improved economic outlook, the rates of decline in total consumer appliances volume and current value sales in 2011 were significantly slower than those recorded in 2010, and also well below the average rates of decline for the entire review period.

The Consumer Appliances in Hungary market research report includes:
  • Analysis of key supply-side and demand trends
  • Detailed segmentation of international and local products
  • Historic volumes and values, company and brand market shares
  • Five year forecasts of market trends and market growth
  • Robust and transparent market research methodology, conducted in-country

Energy efficiency appliances gain popularity among Hungarian consumers

During the review period, energy efficiency became an increasingly important consideration for Hungarians when buying appliances. As household budgets came under pressure due to the economic crisis and rising utility bills, consumers began to pay greater attention to how much water or electricity different appliances used. This was especially the case with regard to major appliances. As consumers became better educated about this issue, they proved increasingly willing to pay higher prices for more energy efficient products, recognising that they could prove a more economical choice in the long term. The fact that energy efficient appliances are better for the environment also made them more attractive to some consumers. For most Hungarians, however, the eco-friendly properties of energy efficient appliances were not as important as their economic benefits. As a result, the issue of environmental protection was more important in marketing campaigns for individual brands than it was in purchasing decisions by consumers.

Hypermarkets and internet retailers make gains in distribution

In terms of retail distribution, durable goods retailers channels continued to account for the largest share of total consumer appliances volume sales in 2011. During the review period, however, the market volume share of durable goods retailers as a whole declined steadily as other channels gained ground, most notably hypermarkets. Volume share gains for hypermarkets were underpinned by the convenience trend and increased price sensitivity among consumers in the wake of the economic crisis. Together with improvements in online payment security systems, these factors also supported more modest volume share gains for the internet retailing channel. Independent electrical goods retailers were worst affected by the rise of these channels, with the market volume share of the former declining dramatically over 2006-2011. Multiple electrical goods retailers fared considerably better thanks to their ability to offer wider assortments, more competitive prices and comprehensive after sales services. These advantages ensured that multiples were able to join hypermarkets chains and internet retailers in stealing volume shares from independent electrical goods retailers.

Power Infrastructure in Europe

This research investigates the current position and the issues for the next generation of Europe’s power industry.
Features and Benefits
  • Analyze electricity demand profiles in Europe by country.
  • Analyze the latest energy storage technology.
  • Get up-to-date information on the development of the smart grid.
  • Understand how offshore generation is impacting power infrastructure.
  • Understand how the future power infrastructure in Europe will pan out.
Highlights
An assessment of energy flows in 2010 indicates that a large number of countries are dependent on energy exports to meet demand. In this assessment "wheeling," where a country acts as a conduit to energy moving from one country to another, is ignored, since the import flow into the wheeling country would equal the subsequent export flow.
While the pressure is present to develop extensive renewable energy projects across Europe, driven by both public perception and political will, it is likely that conventional generation will continue to be the dominant source of electricity generation for at least the next long-term planning cycle.
To date, the proximity to the shore of the majority of offshore developments has meant that economics have dictated that HVAC transmission technology be used. However, as farm to shore distances increase it is likely that greater use of HVDC will come to the fore.

2011-2012 Global and China Epoxy Resin Industry Chain Report

Epoxy resin is a polymeric compound containing two or more epoxy groups and mainly finds application in coatings, electrical systems and electronics, and composite materials which together consume around 80% of the global epoxy resin.
In 2011, the global epoxy resin output approximated 2.24 million tons (80%-95% of which were Bisphenol A Epoxy Resin) and was mainly distributed in Asia, Western Europe and the United States where their output totally made up over 90% of the global total. Among these origins, China is the world’s largest producer and delivers about 37.1% of the global total output. As the European and American markets grow saturated, the increase of epoxy resin production is principally contributed by Asian countries especially China. In 2005-2011, the CAGR of epoxy resin output in China hit 10.8%, while that in Euro-American regions was only 3% or so.
Chinese epoxy resin manufacturers started late and few of them possess absolute scale advantages, featuring lower industry concentration degree than Euro-American nations. In 2011, the top 10 epoxy resin producers in Mainland China accounted for 60% of the national total capacity, while the capacity of the world’s top 6 epoxy resin manufacturers made up 61.8% of the global total. In this year, the top 3 epoxy resin manufacturers by capacity in Mainland China included Nan Ya Epoxy Resin (Kunshan) Co., Ltd., Sanmu Group and Kingboard Chemical Holdings Ltd.

Netherlands Alcoholic Drinks Market

Continuing decline in beer and spirits

Sales of alcoholic drinks continue to experience a decline in demand due to the popularity of drinks such as beer and a steady decline in sales of traditional ones such as spirits, triggered by changes in consumer habits with a greater preference for healthier drinks. On-trade sales showed initial improved results in comparison to the previous year, impacted by very good weather during spring that motivated more people to visit outdoor cafés and bars. However, the shift towards off-trade sales within alcoholic drinks continued in 2011 as more people concerned with rising foodservice prices were motivated to entertain at home more.

Dutch consumers shift towards products with a healthier image

Dutch consumers are increasingly health conscious; keen to reduce consumption of food and drinks considered to be unhealthy or leading to disease. Alcoholic drinks is influenced by this trend as more consumers are drinking less alcohol or switching to products that contain with lower alcohol content. Wine is experiencing healthy growth in The Netherlands triggered by more demand from consumers who usually drink other alcoholic drinks, such as young males. Other sparkling wine, such as prosecco, or cider are gaining popularity as an alternative to beer or spirits. Government campaigns to prevent the young from drinking alcohol are intensifying while media reports of alcohol abuse with fatal consequences continue to harm the image of alcohol further. Products such as non-alcoholic beer registered the highest growth in 2011, impacted by rising demand from consumers who are shifting from standard beer, for example.

Grocery retailers place pressure on price in order to capture demand

The Dutch distribution map for alcoholic drinks is led by grocery retailers, as supermarkets continue to concentrate more sales through intense promotion and offers in key products such as beer and wine. Internet retailing is registering the fastest growth rate in terms of distribution, although from a smaller base. More Dutch people are using the internet not only to compare prices and research products, but also to purchase. Traditional retailers such as food/drink/tobacco specialists are witnessing intensified pressure from grocery retailers and non-store retailing, trying to respond with more price promotions in categories such as wine or beer.
