Carbon fiber is a new generation of
reinforced fiber, mainly used in the fields of aerospace, wind power,
automotive, sports and leisure. Industrial applications like wind power,
automotive and pressure vessel account for the largest demand for
carbon fiber, which is more than 60%, followed by aerospace, with
enhanced application and hence steadily increased demand; the growth of
demand from sports and leisure has been relatively slow. The global
carbon fiber demand maintained a CAGR of 14.1% in 2008-2012, and hit
54,500 tons in 2012.
In 2010-2012, as the demand for carbon
fiber has been recovered, global leading carbon fiber manufacturers have
accelerated the capacity expansion of carbon fiber. In 2012, the global
carbon fiber capacity reached 114,000 tons, a year-on-year growth of
18.3%.
Due to the complex process and high technical content
of carbon fiber Buy production, global carbon fiber capacity is mainly
concentrated in Japanese and U.S. enterprises. Japan''s Toray, Toho and
Mitsubishi Rayon, mainly engaged in the production of PAN-based
small-tow (≤24K) carbon fiber, accounted for 2/3 of the global total
small-tow carbon fiber capacity in 2012. Toray is the largest carbon
fiber manufacturer in the world, with an annual capacity of 18,900 tons
in 2012.
U.S. Zoltek and German SGL, mainly engaged in the
production of large-tow (>24K) PAN-based carbon fiber, accounted for
about 3/4 of the global large-tow carbon fiber capacity in 2012.
Japanese Kureha, mainly engaged in the production of pitch-based carbon
fiber, is the largest pitch-based carbon fiber producer in the world,
with an annual capacity of 1,800 tons in 2012.
Stimulated by
incentive policies and the gap between supply and demand, coupled with
the gradual progress of industrial technology, China’s carbon fiber
industry is ushering in rapid development. China’s carbon fiber capacity
maintained a CAGR of 46.2% in 2008-2012, and reached 14,521 tons in
2012. As China’s carbon fiber production technology hasn’t been mature
and most production lines are in the initial stage of production, the
plant operating rate has been generally low. In 2012, the actual output
was only 3,500 tons, and the import dependency rate was about 70%.
In
2012, China''s major producers of carbon fiber include ZhongFuShenYing,
Jiangsu Hengshen, Tianhua Excel-Way, Weihai Tuozhan Fiber, HNCC
Yongmei, etc. Among which, only ZhongFuShenYing and Jiangsu Hengshen
each boast an annual carbon fiber output of about 1,000 tons, and an
annual capacity of 3,000 tons at present.
In addition, there
are about 38,000 tons of carbon fiber capacities under
planning/construction in China. The projects to be put into production
in 2013 include 2,000 t/a carbon fiber project of Kingfa, 1,500 t/a
carbon fiber project of Sinosteel Jiangcheng Carbon Fiber, and 1,500 t/a
carbon fiber project of Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical.

The global smart grid
market is expected to reach $80.6 billion in 2016 from $22.8 billion in
2011 at a CAGR of 28.7% from 2011 to 2016. Some of the players in the
smart grid market include Landys+Gyr (U.S.), Itron (U.S.), Cisco (U.S.),
eMeter (U.S.), and Telvent (U.S.).
Smart grid intends to modernize the power grid by using the latest
technology that supports the utility to reduce the transmission and
distribution loss. This can be achieved with the help of advanced
metering infrastructure, software’s such as SCADA, DRM, DMS, MDMS, etc.,
and communication networks such as Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, etc.
Smart
grid will balance the electricity supply and demand. It will improve
the grid reliability by monitoring the frequency and duration of power
outages and the number of disturbances, including reduction of the
possibility of regional blackouts. Smart grid will improve the
efficiency and dependability in energy distribution and assist in
optimizing utilization of resources.

Reduction in transmission and
distribution loss, coupled with an increase in energy efficiency, is
one of the major drivers of the smart grid market. The governments of
various countries are playing important roles in the commercialization
of the smart grid market and passing on mandates and regulations for the
same. The high cost of installation of the entire smart grid network is
one of the restraints of the smart grid market. Another major restraint
is the lack of interoperability of standards. There are huge amounts of
investments happening in the smart grid market, which are an
opportunity for the growth of the market. Prepaid electricity is also
en-route, wherein the users will prepay for the electricity that will be
consumed by them.
Lack of interoperability standards exists at
all the levels in a system. There are numerous service providers across
the globe with different standards of operating and meeting a common
consensus is very important for the growth of any industry. This is
lacking in the smart grid market as every country has its own rules and
mandates. This leads to a slower adoption of technology and increases
risks for the industry as a whole.
The current trend prevailing in
the smart grid technology market is the upgradation of old technology
as well as adopting a new technology, which will lead to a more
efficient usage of electricity. The increase in investment from the
governments as well as the utilities’ point of view is expected to reach
a billion mark in the next five years.

World demand to approach $16 billion in 2015 - This
amounts to a substantial improvement over the 2005- 2010 period. Going
forward, a variety of factors will contribute to this healthy growth,
including:
Recovery in key developed markets such as the
United States, Western Europe and Japan -- all of which use loadings at a
rate far above the global average.
Sustained growth in
developing markets, bolstered by sustained levels of construction
activity, increased cement consumption, and growing use of additives to
shorten construction times, save on labor costs and draw concrete
construction practices closer into line with the standards in more
developed markets.
Growing popularity of self-consolidating
concrete (SCC) and other more additive-intensive, high-performance
concrete formulations.
All major additives expected to post healthy advances
Use
of mineral additives in concrete formulations is expanding due to
efforts to reduce overall cement consumption and to take advantage of
performance attributes offered by industrial waste products such as fly
ash and blast furnace slag.

Chemical additive demand will be led by water reducers, particularly high-value superplasticizers
used in SCC and other high-performance applications. Air entrainers and
other smaller chemical products will also benefit from increased use in
SCC, which is finding greater use in high-rise buildings, dams and
other structures with particularly rigorous performance criteria.
The
fiber segment, which is smaller than the chemical or mineral segments,
is expected to register growth due to rebounding demand in several key
markets and increasing use of fiber additives in markets in which their
use has been less common, including countries in Western Europe and
other relatively mature additive markets. Additionally, growing use of
combinations of synthetic and steel fibers will boost value gains.
Building applications to lead growth
Global
building construction activity is expected to accelerate substantially
following a weak period, boosting demand for additives used on building
concrete, particularly in high-rise buildings and other nonresidential
structures. Gains in residential construction will also be considerable,
although additive usage in that segment is generally less intensive.
Advances
in the highway and street market will be strongest in developing areas
such as the Africa/Mideast region and China, where roads and other
infrastructure expansion is occurring most rapidly.
Robust gains
in public infrastructure, especially in the developing countries of
Asia, the Middle East and South America will create value growth due to
the greater use of better-performing concrete applications for dams,
airports and other major projects. Such projects often require larger
volumes of additives to provide the expected level of durability,
workability, strength, and resistance to salts, chemicals and weather.
COMPANY PROFILES
Profiles global players such as BASF, Sika and WR Grace and more.
